Tamed Dissonance.Grasping Our Tumultous Nature



Urban photographic commentary: Tamed Dissonance is a collage photographic series exploring the coexistence of order and disorder within the human-made ecosystem of the city, finding structure and beauty in what is overlooked, displaced, and imperfect.

Tamed Dissonance explores the tension between order and disorder through everyday urban environments. Developed through walks and observation around Helsinki, the project turns attention towards displaced objects, construction sites, neglected structures, arbitrary arrangements, and other elements commonly dismissed as mundane or “not beautiful.” Rethinking the perception of these imperfections as visual noise, the series considers the city as a human-made ecosystem, a kind of “new nature” shaped by our contradictions, improvisations, and constant transformation.

The project begins from an attraction to overlooked details and the stories carried by neglected objects and spaces. By observing what is displaced, temporary, broken, or unintentionally arranged, disorder becomes a way of reading human presence within the city. What initially appears chaotic can reveal its own structures and relationships when given enough attention. Attention then, becomes a form of seing balanced structures and patterns.

The final series consists of five photographic compositions made in Helsinki, developed through digital photography, double exposure, image superposition, and post-production. Each composition brings together two opposing approaches: one photographic layer is deliberately framed according to compositional principles, while another is captured through a raw, spontaneous, and improvised process. Their superposition allows control and unpredictability to coexist within the same image, creating compositions that remain visually cohesive without removing their dissonance.

Through this tension, Tamed Dissonance asks whether imperfection, randomness, and contradiction can reveal something more honest about the environments we create and inhabit. The projects sought to become an invitation to look again at what normally disappears into the background and reconsider beauty as something that can emerge from the unplanned, unstable, and imperfect.
