Speculative multispecies habitat: A ceramic 3D-printed insect habitat integrating passive sound amplification, inviting people to stop, listen, and become more aware of the small urban species with whom we share our surroundings.


How often do we actually listen to the other species living around us? BZZT Box! is a concept that began from the idea of making the presence of urban insects a little harder to ignore. Developed during an intensive clay 3D-printing workshop at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, the project imagines a ceramic habitat for insects that also invites humans to come closer, stop, and listen.

The stoneware structure combines different cavities for small urban creatures with an integrated sound-amplifying form. Its was developed through 3D modelling and the possibilities and limitations of clay extrusion, allowing the printing process itself to guide its layered, irregular geometry.

Placed in public space, BZZT Box! becomes a small meeting point between species. Insects inhabit it; people are invited to get closer and listen. Sometimes all we need is a small reminder of the multispecies life already happening around us. Could making these usually unnoticed neighbours more present to our senses make us a little more empathetic toward our surroundings?
